With a minimum of 3 years experience supporting in a team environment, an intermediate executive assistant will support 1-4 people. As executive assistants progress in their career, they will support at senior management level, often in a 1:1 capacity. senior executive assistants will support C-Suite personnel. At this level, it is not uncommon for executive assistants to manage junior administration personnel as they take on operational duties and become a true business partner for their executive.

What does an Executive Assistant do?

The role of executive assistant can include a myriad of duties, but some of the key daily duties include:

  • You take away the ‘noise’ and allow your executive to do what they are good at
  • Diary, email and travel management
  • Phone and email correspondence on behalf of the executive
  • Act as a gatekeeper
  • Document analysis, preparation and management
  • Research and prepare reports and presentations
  • Minute taking and agendas
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, often industry VIPs and high-net-worth individuals
  • Manage and mentor junior administration support staff

What is the difference between a temporary and a permanent Executive Assistant job?

There isn’t too much difference in the roles and responsibilities between temporary and permanent executive assistant jobs, with the main difference being one is on a shorter-term basis, i.e. temporary. Although with a temporary executive assistant job, typically you need to start straight away and be able to hit the ground running! Often, there isn’t a handover so being proactive and self-sufficient is a good skill to have. If you’re looking for permanent or temporary work, do get in touch.

The term executive assistant is often abbreviated to EA. In some firms, the terms executive assistant and personal assistant (PA) are used interchangeably for junior positions, however, this is not to be confused with private personal assistant roles. How much do Executive Assistants earn in Sydney?

Executive assistants in Sydney typically earn from $80,000 to $180,000+ depending on the level of experience

Junior – $65-80k/Yearly salary, $28-35/Hourly rate

Intermediate – $80-100k/Yearly salary, $35-50/Hourly rate

Executive assistants in Melbourne typically earn from $75,000 to $160,000+ depending on the level of experience

What is a typical career pathway for Executive Assistants?

Executive assistants typically come from team assistant backgrounds with proven experience in supporting mid-level managers. While executive assistants may still be required to support a number of managers/executives, executive assistants are more likely to support in a 1:1 capacity. Often, executive assistants that develop a strong working partnership with their executive move with their executive as he or she advances in the business or industry. Executive assistants who aspire to be more operationally involved may progress to operations management or chief of staff positions. Working as an executive assistant to a C-Suite executive is a very senior role and a significant accomplishment. These roles cannot be underrated in the support they give and the contribution they make not only to the executives’ but also the businesses success.
