What makes this company unique?

Since 1956, the Walkley Awards have been renowned for upholding the highest standards of journalism. Established with a mission to support, nurture and recognise excellence in the industry, the Walkley Awards are regarded as the most prestigious distinction amongst Australian journalists.

Aside from benchmarking journalistic virtue, the Walkley Foundation offers a plethora of invaluable training and development resources for writers, journalists, and photographers.

Australia’s version of the Pulitzer Prizes not only represent the peak of achievement for the Australian media but also honour the courage and hard work required to make public the stories that shape our society and challenge the status quo.

Headquartered at a landmark heritage building in Redfern, close to eateries and public transport, you will report directly to the CEO, taking on the organisation’s financial reins and governance responsibilities.

If you are an experienced accountant and a personable individual with an appreciation for independent thinking, and the arts, then look no further, this is your dream role!

What is unique about you?

With comprehensive accounting experience, you are confident in your ability to oversee the finances of a complex organisation. You know how to work to the highest standards and thrive in a dynamic environment, managing competing priorities. You expertly model business projects, forecasts and take pride in producing detailed financial analysis. You possess a strong understanding of budgeting, funding systems and grant structures.

A minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience and previous exposure to arts, not-for-profit or funding-reliant settings are highly desirable. Above all, you are a genuine, communicative, approachable individual who enjoys being part of a team, participating in purpose- driven work to make a difference in your community.

A snapshot of your role…

  • Prepare and analyse monthly reports to the CEO and bi-monthly board reports. Perform Company Secretarial duties such as the preparation of board papers, attendance and minuting of the board meetings, induction of new directors and support with high-level governance matters
  • Sign off payroll for outsourced processing, revise and approve Xero processed accounts. Oversee cash reserves and term deposits, ensuring compliance with Australian accounting standards, IFRS, ASIC and ACNC regulations
  • Create and structure the annual budget, monitoring project expenditures, developing the foundation’s P&L and reporting the finances to the board of directors

  • Supervise two direct reports across the sponsorship, philanthropy management and executive office functions, overseeing sponsorship contracts and signing off major grants
  • Work with the CEO to plan the strategic directives and model business analysis, identifying and mitigating financial risks, making recommendations and improving processes for maximum profitability and sustainable growth
