Future Career Opportunities Abound for Executive Assistants!

The Executive Assistant (EA) profession has evolved dramatically over time. Today’s EAs are no longer solely administrative support, they are strategic partners, project coordinators, and trusted advisors. With this evolution comes opportunity: career progression beyond the traditional EA path is increasingly visible, attainable, and recognised. These new pathways allow EAs to leverage their existing skills in new, high impact ways.

A proven Senior EA has a wealth of transferable, and desirable skills:

·        They are strategic thinkers & decision-makers

·        They have exceptional stakeholder & relationship management

·        The seamlessly manage projects & display operational oversight

·        They always maintain discretion and confidentiality

These competencies form a foundation for career progression into a variety of roles, whether staying within the EA profession or exploring new avenues.

Chief of Staff (COS)

Many senior EAs leverage their experience, insight, and strategic perspective to transition into Chief of Staff roles. These positions often require a mix of leadership, decision-making, financial and stakeholder management skills. Those EAs that follow this path step into roles that influence company strategy and operations at the highest level.

EST10’s top tips…

Lateral Moves: Project, Operations, Business Management

Some EAs choose to pivot laterally into project and operational roles. Here, their organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills are highly transferable. These positions allow EAs to broaden their impact, gain new experiences, and position themselves for future leadership opportunities.

These lateral moves can also position you for future leadership opportunities while building a diverse portfolio of experiences.

EAs are skilled in relationship management, discretion and organisational awareness, these skills are highly valuable in an HR capacity. Some EAs will transition into a role involving Learning and Development or Employee Experience.

Career EA Excellence – C-Suite

The EA profession is a recognised and highly respected career. And the C-suite EA role sits at its apex. Far from a supporting function, these professionals are strategic right and left hands, trusted partners to executive leaders: driving key organisational and leadership initiatives, managing complex internal and external relationships and so much more.

Their influence extends across the organisation, often mentoring the next generation of talent. It’s a career that demands exceptional judgment, discretion, integrity and business acumen.

EST10’s top tips…

·        Position yourself as a trusted advisor and strategic partner

·        Never falter on discretion and confidentiality

·        Continuously refine EQ, communication, self-awareness and influencing skills

·        Take ownership of high-impact initiatives and demonstrate results

·        Proactively offer insights and recommendations to support decision-making.

The EA profession today offers multiple pathways, whether that is advancing into a COS position, branching into operational or project leadership, or career refining to senior EA positions. Each path leverages the skills, experience, and strategic insight you’ve developed, while offering opportunities to grow your influence and career impact.

Action point!

1.     Map your career vision today

2.     Identify the experiences and skills to develop

3.     Take deliberate steps to achieve them

Your EA role is more than administrative, it’s a platform for leadership, influence, and professional growth.
