To temp, or not to temp, that is the question. Searching for a permanent place to call home can be an arduous task – from the abundance of interviews, to the constant back and forth and the salary negotiations. Finding the right fit for you both professionally and personally is critical. Sometimes, no matter how many interviews you attend, you can never get a true feel for the company until your first day. This is where temping can be great!

Firstly, if you have delved into the market recently, you may have noticed the plethora of contract and temporary roles available at the moment. We at EST10, are experiencing this greatly, however, we have noticed some hesitation from candidates in considering temporary positions. The main reason being a lack of security and seemingly stopping people from securing permanent work.

Opportunity knocks when you are temping. By nature of the urgent and immediate temp needs, you are often in positions that wouldn’t ordinarily be presented to you in a permanent role. This can be your chance to take on left of centre positions, expand your skill set or be exposed to roles you may have been too afraid to try before!

Building confidence, self-esteem and self-efficacy are what temping does for you! Going out into the market after working somewhere for a long period of time can be confronting and even a little scary. We love, in fact, we advocate longevity on your resume. However, one also needs to be careful of being complacent or even institutionalised if in the one place for too long. And then when it does comes time to leave, we often see a lack of confidence with people, and it’s such a shame!

Finding your feet in a temp role gives you that opportunity to keep up your skills – even if that is while you are searching for the perfect role. Every company and office have their way of doing things- this also keeps you fresh and current!

Work-Life Balance- As a recruiter, this is the phrase we often hear! Temping can provide that flexibility for you. For example, if you embark of a 3-month role, you can choose whether to jump straight into another role straight away or take a 3-week holiday. For those who believe that life is more about work, this could be the perfect compromise.

No interviews! More often than not, due to the immediate/next day start date of temp roles, there is no need for interviews. This means that there is no back and forth, no anxious wait to hear feedback and – most importantly – no extended period without work. Temping through an agency takes away all of that stress, they do the hard work and negotiation, and you get out working as soon as possible.
