Temping - a smart career move?

At some point every Assistant is likely to do some temporary or contract work. There can be a multitude of reasons. Sometimes it is an active choice, other times it is a necessity. Hiring managers often talk of the importance of longevity on your resume. However, temporary work can provide valuable experience and increase your skill set. Below are three of the most common situations:

1.      Early in your career temping can be a great way to experience different industries, cultures, and management styles. You might be unsure on the direction you want to take, industry or even job. Gaining solid experience via temporary assignments to solidify those decisions and expand your horizons to consider other options.

2.      Returning to the workforce. Temporary roles are invaluable to regain confidence, skills and to re-establish the whole working routine. When adding a child into the mix of getting ready for work in the morning, it’s a whole new ball game! Equally, your employer benefits from your experience, expertise, and immediate availability.

3.      If your role has been made redundant, temping is a fabulous way to keep your skills up to date and keeping you motivated. Redundancies can be tough! It is crucial to keep feeling positive, especially for your mental health. Temping also removes some financial pressures, that can cause us to make a reactive job choice instead of being well considered.

The benefits of temping are huge! Here are some of our top benefits. However, this certainly isn’t an exhaustive list!

1.      Temping offer’s exposure to many different working styles; your colleagues and bosses. Some you will like, some you won’t. Each role allows you the opportunity to fine tune your skills, pick up tips and tricks from peers and learn what you do and don’t like, enabling you to make a more informed decision about future career moves.

2.      Temping when in between roles shows a strong work ethic and adaptability. Employers love this, especially in our fast paced and ever changing world.

3.      You learn other ways of doing your job. This can be systems, processes, office protocols etc. You are also fine tuning your ability to adjust and learn quickly. In today’s working environment, this is a very much needed and highly desired skill. An extra string to add to your employability bow.

4.      A final aspect to temping is the likely option for a temporary to permanent role. You have the opportunity to shine and show your skills, attributes, and work ethic! This is wonderful for anyone not so great at interviewing!

Temping isn’t for everybody. Some assistant’s will never do any temp work and others will proactively choose to only do temporary and contract work. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, temporary work can deliver some extraordinary benefits!
