London Vs. Sydney

Our WHV Competition winner Ella Crowley reflects on some of the differences between urban London and her former beach-side home in Sydney…

I’ve been giving a bit of thought to how London and Sydney compare, and the first thing that comes to mind is how different it feels walking out my front door to find myself in the city! I live right near the beach in Sydney and have swapped insular suburbia for urban London. I’m still not quite accustomed to shoes being an absolute necessity, or how much nicer people dress! Home in Sydney is quiet at night, but a hub of activity in the morning… people on a run, doing yoga on the beach, walking their dog or going for a surf.

Sydney-siders seem to imagine London as a concrete jungle – and I admit I was worried about not being able to find some grass to sink my feet into – but I find this city still holds so many unexpected pockets of nature. You just have to be more active in seeking them out. Parks and community gardens are a welcome oasis that are so well utilised and never far away. Although London isn’t the hub of health and activity that Sydney boasts I stumble across gyms and yoga studios at practically every corner, as well as loads more people zipping around on bikes – it’s simply a matter of weaving this kind of activity into your routine and budget.

Then, as expected, London wins out in terms of art and culture. The amount of theatres, bookstores, galleries and venues is incomparable, outdoing our own arts and culture by sheer volume. Along with this comes a far more impressive and diverse nightlife, with things to do in all areas, at any time, carrying later into the night than Sydney’s 3am lock outs. Overall, London is far denser and better connected than Greater Sydney; commute times tend to prove faster as the tube is direct, frequent and easy to navigate. Not to mention the fact that Europe and North Africa are all just a 3-hour flight away, a fact that will never not be insane to me. Fly three hours from Sydney and you might just reach New Zealand.

Back home, London also tends to be associated with crazy expense. But taking a look at the cost of living in Sydney, it’s not too big of a hike. Rent and transport are higher whilst groceries are a little cheaper… although you have to search harder for the fresh fruit and veg. Opting to cycle can save you a considerable amount, and with the buzz of such a vibrant city, fraught with opportunity and inspiring proximity to the rest of the world, it’s completely worth it.

In terms of work I’ve found Sydney to have more of a work-to-live mentality. London, meanwhile, is a hub of opportunity with businesses alive with innovation, being home to many successful start-ups. People here are driven and ambitious.
