International Women's Day | #EmbraceEquity

As the team at EST10 prepare to celebrate International Women’s Day 2023, we are proud to embrace this year’s theme: #EmbraceEquity. A powerful call to action, reminding us that true equality cannot be achieved until we embrace equity and ensure every woman has the resources, opportunities, and support she needs to succeed.

In this week’s blog, we wanted to honour some of the women important to us at EST10.

Heather Swan
Heather Swan

Heather Swan is a world-record-holding extreme sports athlete and a passionate advocate of a lifestyle that optimises health, fitness, and emotional resilience.

In 2006 Heather and her husband, Glenn Singleman, set a world record by completing the world’s highest wingsuit base jump from the 22,000-foot (6672m) summit of Mount Meru in the Himalayas of India.

When she’s not adventuring or key-note speaking, Heather manages their farm ‘Dark Horse Farm Yackandandah’ and follows her passion for organically growing her food, meditation, exercise, horses, writing and photography. She is the author of three books and many articles.

Dijanna Mulhern

A Sydney-based author with over 30 years of experience in the fashion industry, including coordinating fashion week shows, managing public relations for Prada and Harper’s BAZAAR, and consulting for top-tier luxury brands such as Ralph Lauren and global giant LVMH. Dijanna has a master’s degree in Communication Design from RMIT and uses her extensive knowledge to explore and decipher subliminal messaging through attire.

And guess what… she has just released her 3rd book, Red Carpet Oscars, compiling the ultimate resource that celebrates the glamour and the impact of Hollywood’s most famous red carpets. In fact, she is heading to the Oscars as we speak with Cate Blanchett to report on this year’s red-carpet fashion.

Lisa Annese
Lisa Annese

Lisa Annese has been the Chief Executive Officer of Diversity Council Australia since 2014. Under Lisa’s leadership, DCA delivers innovative diversity practice resources for Australian businesses. She has led ground-breaking, evidence-based research, including Australia’s first national index on workplace diversity and inclusion, seminal research on the economics of the gender pay gap and original work on building Asian Leadership Capability, as well as research supporting individuals being “Out at Work” and main-streaming flexible work. In 2018, Lisa was named one of the AFR’s 100 Women of Influence, and in 2019 she was elected to the Board of Amnesty International Australia.

All of these three extraordinary ladies are great friends of EST10 and have a shared spirit of generosity, unequivocal compassion, kindness and fearlessness!

The team at EST10 voted the following two women as other inspirational women!

The Queen of the Commonwealth

I nominated Queen Elizabeth in our anonymous team vote and was surprised many in our team did so as well. It appears she reaches people in many ways, as a true leader does. We love the Queen for her bravery, embarking on her leadership journey at the tender age of 25. In 1957, she said in her first televised Christmas broadcast, ‘I am not surprised that many people feel lost and unable to decide what to hold on to and what to discard. How to take advantage of the new life without losing the best of the old. It has always been easy to hate and destroy. To build and to cherish is much more difficult’. This is precisely that wisdom we admire, which could so easily be applied today.

Of course, we can talk of privilege as well, but for us at EST10, we think she embodies some of what we may also be losing in society; manners, commitment, dedication, and protocol. And perhaps, as she aged, we recognised in the gentleness of her eyes that she was also someone’s mother and grandmother.

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill
Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill is one of the greatest British track and field athletes of all time. A specialist Heptathlete, the pinnacle of her athletic career came in 2012 when she claimed Olympic gold in London, capturing the hearts of a nation in the process. Displaying extraordinary resilience, Jessica won the heptathlon world title in Beijing just fifteen months after giving birth to her son Reggie. Jessica was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to sport.

On her retirement from athletics in 2016, Jessica turned her focus to creating a new business – Jennis – an app that helps women optimise their hormonal health and fitness through smart training programmes at all stages of their life journey. These programmes empower women to understand their bodies and hormones. In her own words, “through tech, science and female physiology, we’re on a mission to change the game.

We hope our admiration for these women opens the broader dialogue and motivates everyone to acknowledge those who inspire us and teach us the qualities we want to see in ourselves and our environment. We all carry with us unique dreams and aspirations for our lives and futures. It is a great time to remember that we are lucky to live in a country where these dreams can meet reality. Let’s be grateful for our gift of freedom and choice as we approach this important day.
