At EST10, we love a good TED Talks as much as the next person. So when we recently rediscovered David Grady’s How to save the world (or at least yourself) from bad meetings, we couldn’t help but share!
You can probably guess what Grady’s presentation is all about. And while he does provide some useful tips, the thing we’re most interested in is the concept of Mindless Accepts Syndrome (MAS for short!).
According to Grady, Mindless Accept Syndrome is a terrible epidemic sweeping the working world. “Ding, click, bing” says Grady. Sound familiar? It should! Grady is describing our tendency to accept calendar invites as soon as they pop up in our inbox. Yes, meetings are important, but why are we holding a meeting? What are we hoping to achieve? The fact of the matter is, if we don’t know the answers to these questions, we shouldn’t be clicking accept. To do so would be setting us up for an unproductive session, and as nice as our co-workers are, it’s high time we say ‘no más’ (Spanish for ‘no more!’) or as Grady likes to say ¡No MAS!… No more Mindless Accept Syndrome!
