Finally Found The Perfect EA? Now To Nurture Your Relationship…

We know how difficult it can be to find that perfect person… the one you can trust and rely on to be there when you need them, anticipating your needs before you know them yourself and scheduling your days just the way you like them.

Once you’ve found your dream EA, you’ll want to hang on to them with both hands. In our experience, the longest lasting relationships between EA and Executive are those that are nurtured and cherished, just like every other important relationship in life. So as an Exec who just found their dream EA, what can you do to lay the foundation for a strong and lasting relationship?

1. Set clearly defined expectations

Making sure you are both on the same page from the beginning will ensure you get off on the right foot and stay there. Take the time to set clear expectations around work duties and define as measurable outcomes to provide direction and determine success.

2. Encourage questions

Your EA should feel comfortable to approach you with any questions he or she may have. Keeping communication channels open will benefit both of you in achieving your goals each day. The better your EA knows you and the company, the better they will be at making your life easier.

3. Get to know them

Just because your relationship with your EA is a professional one, this does not mean that your relationship should be impersonal. By taking the time to get to know one another, you’ll be able to establish a good rapport and uncover what motivates your EA.

4. Mentor as much as possible

We know Execs are always busy but taking the time to offer extra training and guidance early on is well worth the effort; your EA will become more knowledgeable and competent as a result but more importantly, your EA will appreciate the time and effort you have invested in them. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye out for any training or career development opportunities that may be beneficial to your EA and encourage them to attend!

5. Recognise their efforts

Execs that offer recognition and thanks to their support staff will find that those staff are more motivated and hardworking as a direct result. Even a simple “thank you” or “great work” goes a long way in retaining your favourite staff. Make sure you also provide feedback on a regular basis to keep your EA on track, rather than waiting for an annual review.

Encouraging a strong relationship between yourself and your EA will make both your jobs easier whilst as create a friendly and supportive office environment – vital for a smooth-running business!
