Welcome to the February edition of The Assistants Newsletter!
Welcome to the February edition of The Assistants.

We hope your 2025 has started off well! Our first newsletter for the year looked at changing jobs and how to be employable. Well, we thought in following suit, to provide you with some advice and tips to reach your true earning power.

Excitedly, our MD, Roxanne Calder, has written a second book, ‘Earning Power- Breaking Barriers and Building Wealth for Women’. It is all about female worth and earning what you deserve. The book broaches the deeply complex issue of the gender pay gap. The gender pay gap states that women earn $1 million less over their lifetime than men. And when it comes to retirement, we are also behind- $136,000 less in our superannuation. The gender pay gap attributes much of the gap to discrimination, time off for caring responsibilities and ‘feminised industries’.

But the thing is, at EST0- we have known about the million gap for some time. Instead, from an internal perspective, we see women not taking up opportunities for advancements, self-promotion, pay rises, and even training. We calculated the loss in earning ourselves, and yes, it comes to a million dollars…and counting.

Hence, why Earning Power was written! It’s a book for you! To gain additional insights and knowledge…Rox interviewed some incredible people for the book- Nagi Maehashi, Peta Credlin, Julia Ross, Kristina Karlsson, Professor Fiona Wood, Leila McKinnon and Phil Kearns. We’ve had the luxury of a preview read and love it! We wanted you also to have an advance snippet of what Earning Power is about!

Much love,

EST10

Earning Power sneak peek...
It’s 1995, and I’m starting my first job. The workforce is vastly different from today. For a start, discrimination and bias was rife. But I didn’t know any different. Where I worked, we had a no pants policy. Suits at work were mandatory, so were stockings and closed toed shoes. There was no such thing as casual Fridays or casual ‘anything’. Where I worked was no different to anywhere else at the time. We all followed suit.

‘There are plenty of people who say you can’t do things. But you don’t have to listen to them. Yes, I was told women don’t do surgery, but I chose not to listen.’ Professor Fiona Wood.

Bring it forward, and the no pants policy might be long gone, but gender bias in all its glory still exists. We either ignore it or, like ‘back in the day’, know no different- because we are so used to it, it’s ingrained. We see it as the norm and not as bias or discrimination at all. This is where “Earning Power” applies a great deal of its focus and effort. Women carry with them to the workforce an ingrained belief of how we view our contribution and worth. This is not a new phenomenon either; I’ve been witnessing it for decades. If you are thinking it applies to the ‘older’ generation, it doesn’t, and that is what is alarming. It applies to the 20 and 30 something fabulously talented and gifted women I meet and interview.

‘We are now less about dealing with the overt mechanisms holding women back and more about the covert ones.’ Peta Credlin.

Earning Power looks at the beliefs we hold onto that stop us from achieving ‘more’. It examines the traps we fall into in justifying why we can’t or, worse, ‘shouldn’t’ reach our potential. It provides insight into how to ask for help and harness your support network. It even demonstrates through a super simple formula the loss in earnings when you don’t take up a workplace opportunity, turn down the promotion or even when you might lack the courage to ask for a pay rise or negotiate better conditions. You will be surprised to see how saying ‘no’ can impact your lifetime earnings. The book gently asks you to question some of your self-beliefs and peals back the layer to uncover the truths that stops you asking for what you deserve.

‘I just pick myself up and dust myself off and I keep going.’ Nagi Maehashi.
