Critical! And don't confuse being employed as employable!

Changing Careers or Jobs Now?

I’m asked daily if it’s the ‘right time to change careers or jobs.’ And as we enter the sixth month of actively dealing with COVID-19 and all the uncertainty that surrounds us all, the concept of being employable is crucial to understand.
Firstly, let’s acknowledge that no one has an accurate idea nor data to predict with certainty how the employment world will look like in the near and distant future.
That means, if you are privileged in remaining employed right now, you need to be looking at ways you can both re-skill and upskill while you have the safety of your job. The responsibility lies with you in making your development a priority.
In our current times, no matter, whether you stay where you are or go elsewhere, mastering new skills will be imperative to your success. We have already witnessed the swift upskilling in using technology in remote working.
The Forever Learning Trait
The best advice I can give you is to embrace a ‘forever learning’ trait in your toolbox of skills. This will keep you curious, adaptive, and engaged.
To be employable…means, you need to be and stay competitive.
I don’t want to make you anxious, on the contrary. My advice is based on our current research, the Masterclasses we run and being deeply engaged with candidates and clients on this subject since we all started feeling the effects of COVID-19, as well as taking into account the decades of industry experience we have.

Without a skerrick of doubt, when recruiting in the future, companies will be looking at totally different skill sets. This will mean you need to take action today and be ready for the change ahead of time. These actions don’t have to be big; incremental shifts are all that is required and mentally accepting the concept is the first step

If you have read this far, my bet is you are already on the right path in accepting our new reality!
Also keep in mind that any instability, be it economic, social, or simply disruptive, will spark the talent competition and will benefit those who decided to invest in their own development, ongoing learning and growth seriously.
Upskill Now!

Now might be the very best time to upskill  –  for we likely have more time than usual to spend investing in ourselves and our future. Take advantage of this time  – this itself is ‘staying competitive’. Use new technology, read the book you left halfway through, study a diploma, degree, or PhD (why not?)…the list is endless.

Skill development should be your new habit and way of being. This self-initiated career awareness now will provide you with the most potent opportunity – being future employable.

“Be patient with yourself. Self-growth is tender; it’s holy ground. There’s no greater investment.” – Stephen Covey
